Thanksgiving is one of the grandest holidays we get to enjoy. It's a time for giving thanks, spending time with family, watching football, and enjoying a lot of food.
But, if you're like me, after the Thanksgiving feast, as you get hit by the wall of tired and begin to fall asleep, you realize you ate way too much food, way too fast. As you slide into your food coma, you remind yourself not to eat as much next year.
After working in the software development training industry off and on for nearly 15 years, sometimes I think we approach training in much the same way as we approach the Thanksgiving feast. Our eyes and eagarness to learn tend to be much bigger than our stomachs and schedules. We rush, eating everything available to us, all in a very short period of time. And then walk away exhausted, confused, and not being to productively apply what we learned.
Personally, I'm at the point in my life, where I'd rather enjoy, no, savor the food I eat. It's much more fulfilling and creates a long-term memory of not only the food itself, but also the meal. And, if I'm truly honest, I'd rather learn that way too. Instead of viewing training as as an all-you-can eat buffet, I encourage you to view it as a fine delicacy. Chooser less over more. Take small bites. Savor the new concepts. Enjoy the application. And, embrace the experience.
When you do, you'll end up learning more, and walk away feeling excited and refreshed.
