New Hire Development

You're about to hire a bunch of new folks. Get the most out of them from Day One.

Hiring today is more expensive than it has ever been - qualified IT talent is hard to find, salaries and search/placement fees are on the rise, and the time it takes to recoup that investment has gone up. Total hiring costs are measured from the onset of the search to the moment the new hire becomes independently productive. Over the years, companies have streamlined the hiring process to minimize the search costs.

Little has been done to decrease the onboarding time for newly hired technology workers. On average, it takes around 4-6 months before an IT new hire is productive (also known as the "ramp time"), impacting the total hiring cost 3-5 times more than the search costs.

Onboarding / New hire development program

Our onboarding programs cut down the time it takes to move developers from new hire status to productivity status, and reduce the productivity impact of a team’s new addition by removing the mentoring role from your senior team members’ job duties.

With 70-85% of total hiring costs coming from new hire ramp time, a new hire's time to productivity has the most significant impact on the hiring investment's rate of return. Achieving new hire productivity is complicated - technical skills, soft skills, organizational structure, job tools, and processes contribute to this complexity. Typically, companies have formal onboarding processes through human resources - historically, this doesn’t offer a high-quality experience for developers. Due to a functional gap between HR and developers, it’s unusual for human resources managers to understand developers’ unique  learning needs. We fill this gap by communicating developers’ learning needs to HR, designing an appropriate learning solutions program, and helping HR execute the learning solutions program effectively.

A new hire development program success story

For an example of a successful New Hire Development Program approach in action, check out our case study below.

As a large UK telecommunications company expanded into the US market, the hiring managers found it difficult to find candidates with the right mix of telecom experience and software development experience needed to integrate their OSS solution. At the time, the market offered highly experienced telecom engineers or highly experience Java engineers - not both. As a result, the company found itself with a productivity problem. It was taking the newly hired employees twice as long as expected to ramp-up, learn the product and the domain, and effectively integrate the company's solution. The result was lost revenue and a burdened team. To solve this problem, we created and implemented a New Hire Development program; within six weeks, we were able to significantly reduce the time to productivity of new hires, allowing the company to realize a fully-loaded bill-rate 12 weeks after a person was hired.
