Modern Web Development with Visual Studio Code

Course Summary

Microsoft's embrace of open source has resulted in the increasingly popular Visual Studio Code, a lightweight, cross-platform source code editor that runs on your desktop and is available for Windows, macOS and Linux.

This course begins with an overview of the difference between a code editor and an IDE, as well as the changes in the tech world that led to the need for a tool like Visual Studio Code. Students will also explore the default configuration of VS Code and its basic operation, including the command line. The course then explores the day-to-day use of VS Code through a practical lab, creating a basic web application. Refactoring, editing, Intellisense, code snippets, file and code navigation and more will be covered as we modify the application. Along the way, students will learn how to customize the editor's appearance and operation to suit their needs and preferences. The training moves on to demonstrate how VS Code can be used with various common languages, as well as how to integrate code into version control. Then, we'll explore how debugging works in VS Code, after which students will use those skills in a lab. Finally, training concludes with how to integrate VS Code with various external tools via Tasks, giving students the ability to customize VS Code as a primary IDE in a variety of development scenarios.
