About Las Vegas, Nevada

Known as the Entertainment Capital of the World, people from all corners of the globe flock here to see what all the buzz is about. Stick to the mantra, “What happens in Vegas, stays in Vegas” for the simple fact that this is one city you need to see to appreciate.

Fun Facts about Vegas

The Golden Gate Hotel and Casino in Downtown was opened in 1906, making it the oldest in Vegas. Originally known as Hotel Nevada, it has been continuously operating since first opening its doors, aside from repair/upgrade closures. One of Vegas’ most infamous restaurants, Heart Attack Grill, has a sign that tells customers, “Anyone over 350 pounds eats for free.”

Annual Events in Vegas

Aside from the ongoing shows at the casinos, Vegas has other festivals and shows to attend also. Every October, the first weekend showcases arts and other goodies from local, regional, and world-wide artists at Art in the Park. Each May, culinary masters (and home-kitchen renegades) show off their barbecuing abilities at the Best Dam Barbecue Challenge. In September, dancers can show off their moves (and learn a few more) at the Las Vegas Belly Dancing Intensive and Festival.

Things to Do in Vegas

Of course, there is gambling in Vegas. Once the sounds of the machines and all the flashing lights have begun to morph into a migraine, stepping out to see what else the city offers is not a bad idea. The top-rated, must-do while in Vegas is actually not in Vegas at all. Red Rock Canyon National Conservation Area is about 30 minutes from The Strip.

Places to Eat in Vegas

Perhaps not iconic or expensive, but these restaurants offer what is really important: great food. Andiron Steak & Sea's bacon wrapped matzo balls are the perfect addition to any entrée. If steak and pasta are beckoning, Carnevino can’t be beat. Their Riserva, a prime cut of meat aged for up to eight months, is so popular that it is not always available.
